PART 47 TRANSPARENT GLASS DOORS

NYC building regulations can be a bit tricky. Here are some insights that should remedy some of your questions on distraction banding and distraction markers in NYS buildings.

As per Part 47 Transparent Glass Doors in Mercantile Establishments and in Public and Commercial Buildings and Structures circular markers should be at least four inches in diameter, elliptical or polygonal designs should be at least 12 inches wide, and in no event should the height of any marking, banding, or lettering be less than one and one-half inches high. Marking methods such as chemical etching, sand blasting, adhesive strips, decals, paint or other opaque markers can be used on transparent glass surfaces as markers. In regards to marking locations, transparent glass doors and fixed adjacent transparent glass sidelights should be marked in two areas. The first band or marker should be located at least 30, but not more than 36 inches off of the ground, the second band or marker at least 60, but not more than 66 inches off of the ground.

Axiom also recommends referring to your building’s guidelines before installing distraction markers or banding as codes may vary depending on location.
